wirry: hmm..found some time again for playing with my old laptop and still trying to get 3d work on it with gentoo
AStorm: radeonhd doesn't have 3D... yet
wirry: for r5xx it has
AStorm: ah right ;P
AStorm: so, it should "just work (tm)"
wirry: it worked fine with debian, but i want to switch to gentoo on oll my machines
AStorm: it did last time I tried
AStorm: VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" or radeonhd
wirry: yeah, it did with that hardware
AStorm: or both
AStorm: some r5xx
AStorm: not mine
wirry: and well...it works...for some seconds
AStorm: oh, that'd be a bug
wirry: so i want to fix that
AStorm: most likely in DRI
AStorm: fix your kernel
wirry: glxgears ran for 6 seconds now
AStorm: and then what happens? hang? crash?
wirry: the longest i got it running was 15s
wirry: it hangs
AStorm: is it possible to switch out of X?
wirry: nope
wirry: well
AStorm: it's 99% an OOPS
AStorm: do the keyboard leds blink?
wirry: with the driver from git i could ssh to it
wirry: nope nothing...only the fan spins faster and faster
AStorm: then check /var/log/messages
AStorm: and next, /var/log/Xorg.0.log
AStorm: (via ssh)
AStorm: which kernel version do you have?
wirry: 2.6.30
wirry: stable
wirry: and well...scrolling, video etc works just fine
AStorm: interesting. stable mesa, right?
AStorm: might be that the old mesa is incompatible in some respects with DRI2
AStorm: which 2.6.30 has (drm-next merged in?)
AStorm: try mesa 7.5_rc2 or what it's called
AStorm: or even 9999
wirry: yup, stable mesa
AStorm: not from ~? then get one from ~
wirry: ok, i'll try latest mesa and provide you with the logs while building
AStorm: nah, skip the logs
AStorm: just try newer mesa
AStorm: old mesa has enough bugs ;>
wirry: umm well, as im new to gentoo, what do i have to do to emerge latest mesa with all its dependencies from unstable?
AStorm: no, no need for all the deps
AStorm: make yourself /etc/portage/package.keywords/xorg
AStorm: and put there =media-libs/mesa-7.5* ~
wirry: well i tried to emerge mesa 7.4.2 but it says it needs a newer libdrm, which is masked
AStorm: you can skip the ~yourarch part
AStorm: then add that there too
AStorm: should be enough... might not work though
AStorm: I'm not sure if the newer libdrm works with older xorg server, should though
wirry: emerging mesa 7.4.2 (if this wont work i will try 7.5rc)
AStorm: it should work, there are numerous bugs in old mesa
AStorm: another reason why gentoo stable really isn't
AStorm: even debian old with all their backports are buggy
wirry: no distro is perfect :/
AStorm: sure
AStorm: esp. if they cling to old, buggy versions
AStorm: that's why I don't get Gentoo's stable - it doesn't have backported fixes even, at least few of them
wirry: hmm, still the same problem
wirry: but mouse moves so i can ssh to it
wirry: http://vanessa.zapto.org/~nrx2g/gentoo_radeon/radeonhd.png <-- i already killed glxgears, but i can still see the window on the screen...mouse still moves, but i cant interact directly with the laptop
wirry: if i try to switch to a VT the mouse disappears and nothing happens then...
wirry: and i cant restart x...
wirry: but...what does the hald-addon doing there?
wirry: hmm...even with newer xorg-server/xorg-x11 i still have lockups
AStorm: hmm
AStorm: it's then hanging the DRI pipeline
AStorm: now, the question is - is it libdrm/mesa bug, or kernel bug
AStorm: I'm inclined to say the latter
AStorm: and have no idea how to debug this
wirry: well..i can try an older one and install drm by myself
wirry: hmm...softwarerending works so far xD
AStorm: meh, try hardware
AStorm: it should work too
AStorm: I think you'll be best served by using latest -9999 drm.
AStorm: if it works.
wirry: without drm i cant use hardware-rendering ;)
yangman: wirry: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18097
wirry: brb after lunch
AStorm: weird
AStorm: it didn't break on my try...
AStorm: but that was *stable* Gentoo, with fairly non-fresh kernel
AStorm: ah, right
AStorm: that test used Compiz.
AStorm: and this worked
wirry: yangman: so i have to put a "EXANoComposite" into my xorg.conf?
wirry: hmm...seems to work
wirry: 1m without lockup
